There is, There are

There is / There are มีความหมายว่า "มี"
ใช้เมื่อต้องการจะบอกว่า "มีอะไรอยู่ที่ไหน"
เช่นHow many books are there on the table? (มีหนังสืออยู่บนโต๊ะกี่เล่ม)
There is a book on the table. (มีหนังสืออยู่บนโต๊ะ 1 เล่ม)
How many apples are there in the basket? (มีแอ๊ปเปิ้ลอยู่ในตะกร้ากี่ผล)
There is an apple in the basket. (มีแอ๊ปเปิ้ลอยู่ในตะกร้า 1 ผล)
How many pens are there under the chair? (มีปากกาอยู่ใต้เก้าอี้กี่ด้าม)
There are two pens under the chair. (มีปากกาอยู่ใต้เก้าอี้ 2 ด้าม)
จากประโยคตัวอย่างข้างต้นจะพบว่า
There is / There are ใช้แตกต่างกัน ดังนี้
1. There is ใช้นำหน้าคำนามเอกพจน์ หรือคำนามนับไม่ได้
เช่น There is a book on the table. (มีหนังสืออยู่บนโต๊ะ 1 เล่ม)
There is an apple in the basket. (มีแอ๊ปเปิ้ลอยู่ในตะกร้า 1 ผล)
There is water in the glass. (มีน้ำอยู่ในแก้ว)
2. There are ใช้นำหน้าคำนามพหูพจน์
เช่น There are two pens on the chair. (มีปากกาอยู่บนเก้าอี้ 2 ด้าม)
There are eight cats in the room. (มีแมวอยู่ในห้อง 8 ตัว)
There are dogs under the tree. (มีสุนัขอยู่ใต้ต้นไม้หลายตัว)
There is "มี" ใช้กับคำนามนับได้เอกพจน์ หรือคำนามนับไม่ได้
There are "มี" ใช้กับคำนามนับได้พหูพจน์
some "บ้าง" ใช้กับนามนับได้และนับไม่ได้ ประโยคบอกเล่า
many "มาก" ใช้กับนามนับได้ พหูพจน์
